AIA Conference on Architecture 2025

Embodiment and Engagement! Several weeks ago, I returned from Boston energized and excited by AIA25, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference on Architecture, as I am sure many of you did. “Signature moments” abounded, and I find myself still smiling about reuniting with SO many special peeps through continuous ceremonies, events, presentations, discussions, gatherings, meals, and chance meetings. Thank you to the AIA staff team in particular, as well as to all of the volunteers, sponsors, exhibitors, partners, and others who made the conference such a distinct opportunity for connecting within our community.

One tidbit I regard as an unexpected highlight of AIA25 was my “Future Forward” interview with Matt Tinder. Secretly, I had been slightly dreading it prior, but through this curated conversation I reflected warmly on my leadership tenure with the AIA. His questions caused me to consider the pathways one takes to lead, the benefit we receive in serving, and the importance of nurturing leaders for our successful future. Thirty minutes of filming will land largely on the cutting room floor, but one realization coalesced for me in the midst of our discussion.

Each of us has our own leadership qualities … those attributes that make us a particular kind of leader. While many of our descriptions would overlap, each person has a unique ‘combo platter’ of traits that shape their own leadership style. So, what unites us? For me, the answer is two words: embodiment and engagement.

Embodiment is the way we live our life as a leader. The way we conduct ourselves, even when no one is watching. (Yes, character.) The core values we hold dear and embody in every decision we make and every action we take.

Engagement, on the other hand, goes beyond one’s self. Bringing out the best in others. Modeling behaviors that inspire them to follow their own leadership pathway to make a difference for the people and places around them. Being a nurturer, mentor, coach, advisor, and friend – formally and informally. Enabling, equipping, and empowering others to soar.

Leadership is critical to so many aspects of our lives. Governments with poor leaders falter; businesses with weak leaders fail. Strong leaders take us into a shared future that is better for all! How? Through both embodiment and engagement!
