Symposia and seminars and summits, OH MY!

Symposia and seminars and summits, OH MY! There are many reasons for us to attend various AIA-offered conferences and conventions. Based on my own attendance history, I could go on and on about inspiring keynote speakers, world-class educational opportunities, and meeting individuals on the cutting edge of materials, products, and services.

Above all, though – whether the gathering is at the local, state, or national level – the core value of the event (for me) is the opportunity for fellowship with my colleagues. ‘Old home week’ with my peeps! Chance encounters in the hall. Tea with a long-time friend. Serving on a panel with other compatriots. Sharing the stage with remarkably talented architects. To me, this inspiriting communion (and communication) matters more than any other aspects of these sessions.

I love catching up with my colleagues, but I enjoy speaking with those in architecture-adjacent fields just as much. Talking among ourselves delivers vital oxygen to the blood of our work, but finding opportunities to connect with others outside the profession gives our efforts vibrant purpose and context.

Why DO so many of us depart from these gatherings of our colleagues – just as I shall from AIA Virginia’s awesome Architecture Exchange East week after next – with our batteries so fully re-charged? This collective sense of collegiality and spirit of camaraderie are what bind us as a discipline. We are fortunate to share an amity that creates such a truly special professional connection to one another!
