AIA Conference on Architecture 2024

Congrats, Illya, Josh, and Matt! As we excitedly learned the election results for this new cycle of AIA leaders last week, I could not help but reflect on elections of the past. Following one particularly special vote years ago, I imagined how transformed our profession might be if all architects took a solemn pledge at the time they became licensed professionals (as they do in France and other countries) and then again as incoming members of the AIA.

Such a demonstrative oath of commitment and dedication may not be practical for us as a full profession or an entire organization. However, as the leaders of our professional society, we might pause to think about the awesome responsibility we hold through our service. As the three of you bask in the afterglow of your own election, kindly consider what your leadership obligation means to your grateful colleagues:

. YOU devotedly represent every member of the AIA. Your fellow members have expressed a particular confidence in each one of you to shepherd the AIA in the coming years.
. YOU act as a voice for the profession of architecture. We all trust that as such, you will represent the AIA with the highest level of honor, integrity, and ethics.
. YOU are, to those beyond the industry, an exemplar. As you embody the highest standards of our noble discipline, your fellow citizens learn volumes about architects and architecture.
. YOU actively uphold the mission, vision, and ideals of our beloved AIA to serve ALL of society.

Three cheers to you, Illya Azaroff, FAIA, Josh Flowers, and Matthew Toddy, AIA, NCARB! And remember … although your responsibility is great, you are never alone. Those who admire your leadership from near and far offer our support for you and our help to you!!!
