Women are the Architects of Society

“Women are the real architects of society,” wrote Harriett Beecher Stowe in “Household Papers and Stories” in 1896. With a firm belief in that statement, I would submit that, “Mothers are the real designers of humanity.”

At its core, Ms. Stowe’s quotation means that women are the creators of culture, while mine suggests that our humanity comes from mothers – our own mothers as well as the mothers of others. Mothers develop communities of love, hope, and faith, and many have the special gift of making everyone feel like they are the most important person in the world. This nurturing spirit is what builds communities and strengthens society. Mothers are loving and giving … dedicated and devoted … caring and compassionate … not just to their own children but to many of the individuals with whom they come into contact.

Women and mothers such as these have moved me, motivated me, and mentored me. They have touched my life in many ways, shaping me into the person I am today. Each day, I reflect on these treasured relationships and am thankful they occupy such a beloved place in my life. I shall be forever grateful to them for their unconditional love and unwavering friendship.

Happy Mother’s Day to the mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, daughters, and women everywhere (whether familial or not) who support the multitudes of human beings both within and beyond their direct care!
